Two worlds, and the times have changed: business needs accounting, accounting needs business
An accountant cannot stay in the back office, and a business owner cannot live on sales alone. Knowing how to use an app is not the same as understanding a business — experience is earned by doing.

01Key points
- Accounting then: back office, no sales, no IT | Accounting now: knows the systems, knows AI, knows your business
- Business then: sales was everything | Business now: margins are thin and the quote decides whether you live
- Three costs you have to know: operating cost · fixed cost · the compliance cost you cannot see
- Business owners need accountants, and accountants need to understand business — the two worlds have to meet
- Knowing the app is not knowing the business: pick someone who understands your difficulties, not an operator
- Experience is not learned. It is earned by doing

Hook
Boss, today we leave the account codes and the receipts alone and take a bigger subject — two worlds. The world of accounting, and the world of business. These two worlds used to have nothing to do with each other. But the times have changed, and today they have to meet. Otherwise neither side does well.
The accounting world has changed
Take the accounting side first. In the past, accounting was the company's cost centre. Tucked away in the back office doing the books, the reports and the filing, never meeting a customer, never needing to understand sales, and certainly never touching IT. AI? Never heard of it. Do the back office well and you were a good accountant. But today that accountant is no longer enough. The documents are in the cloud, the payments are on a phone, invoicing has gone electronic and the data has to be read. The accountant you need has to know the systems, know the AI tools, and more importantly know what your business actually does. Otherwise the books they keep are just numbers being moved around, and they cannot help you make a single decision.
The business world has changed too
Now the business side. In the past a lot of bosses believed one line: "Get the sales and everything else follows." Push the sales hard, and the accounts? Sort them out at year end. In that era margins were fat, and being a bit rough about it still left you profitable. But today the profit gets thinner every year. Competitors cut prices, costs rise, and there is a pile of spending you cannot see: the cost of compliance, the cost of the systems, operating expenses that appear from nowhere. Price one quote wrong and the whole job can be for nothing. So pricing and quoting now matter more than anything — and quoting right depends on knowing your own costs: how much your operating cost is, how much your fixed cost is, how much you burn every month even with the shutters down. Those numbers are not in your feelings. They are in the books.
The two worlds have to meet
See it? The two roads have crossed. A boss who came up through sales now needs an accountant to show him the costs and get the pricing right. And someone who came up through accounting now needs to understand sales and understand business, or be left in the back office doing what a system can already do. Business needs accounting, accounting needs business. That is the new world.
How to pick an accountant
So the standard for choosing an accounting service has changed too. You are not looking for someone who "knows how to use the app" — whatever the app can do, the app can do by itself. You are looking for an accountant who understands business and understands the difficulties of running one: who knows why your cash is tight, what has to be worked out behind a quote, and which compliance costs will suddenly come knocking. That kind of understanding is not taught from a textbook. It is experience, earned one job at a time.

03Common questions
Is it not enough for an accountant to just get the books right?
Getting them right is the floor. The value of the books is in helping you decide — and someone who does not understand your business can only hand you a pile of numbers.
Will AI replace accountants?
AI replaces the typing and the searching. Judgement, explanation, and sitting with you over your pricing and cost structure are still human work — and worth more now than before.
How do I tell whether an accountant understands business?
Listen to what they ask. Someone who only asks "where are the documents" is an operator. Someone who asks how you quote, what your margin is and how your customers pay is a partner.
