Boss, those of you without an accounting system yet always ask us the same thing: "There are so many systems — which one should I use?" Over the years LTT has used desktop packages and international cloud packages. In the end we put our clients' books in Bukku. Today, plainly, why. Not an advertisement — reasons we arrived at by using them.

Systems are not all alike

The twentieth lesson covered what modern accounting makes possible — but different software genuinely differs in what it can do. Some only invoice, some only do POS, some only an accountant can operate, some have rigid reporting. Bukku puts all of it on one platform: invoicing, bookkeeping, reporting and stock, including the SKU work from the ninth lesson. And it is not built only for accountants — a boss can read it and click through it himself, and with a bit of coaching from LTT he is up and running quickly. It behaves more like a collaboration platform: boss, accountant and staff working on the same set of books. We post in the office while you look at it at home or on your phone, synced in real time, with no email attachments going back and forth.

The three features we value most

One, the invoice layout is clean and good-looking — the front from the twelfth lesson: what goes out to the customer is professional, clear and presentable. It also supports payment integration and recurring billing, so service and subscription businesses invoice and collect automatically every month. Two, no lock period — many systems seal the books shut once a period is closed. In Bukku a transaction from twenty years ago can still be found and amended, so your financial history is always open to you. Three, reports drill down — see a figure on the P&L, click into it, and follow it layer by layer to the source document. The documents-first principle becomes something you can see and touch, and when the audit comes the chain is plainly legible.

How the LTT standard is fitted into Bukku

A good tool still has to be fitted out well. LTT maps its own standard chart of accounts — the DE, IE and PE layering from the fourth lesson — into Bukku's categories: which category each account sits in, and how a separate account is opened for each address and each vehicle, tailored to each client's industry. So on the same Bukku, the books LTT fits out produce reports that are the "being able to see" from the thirteenth lesson: margins, ratios, by job and by item, readable straight off.

Two routes if you have no system yet

The seventh lesson touched on this; here it is more plainly. Route one — go straight onto Bukku. We open the file, fit the chart of accounts, and teach you to invoice. You run it day to day and we look at the year end. Route two — fully managed: we keep the books and you only hand over the documents (the process from the fourteenth lesson) and read the reports on your phone. Not sure which route?
